Good Stewards – The Unsung Heroes
Have you ever witnessed a stranded car being helped out of a ditch by a random do-gooder?
That small act of kindness can have an immense impact.
The call to be a good steward, a good human in a world where that message is easily lost, is more relevant now than ever.
We are more distant from one another than at any point in modern history. Electronic screens and mobile ordering have made the process so automated that the fact that there are humans behind the scenes making everything work properly, is often lost. We also forget, that the heroes we see on the big screen are the culmination of decades of stories and thousands of hours of work, art and acting.
We live in an age of instant gratification, consuming media and games at a pace never before recorded.
The good steward is now facing extinction. Other’s willingness to step out of their comfort zone to help a stranger has taken a drastic downturn, and in some instances rightfully so.
And for that reason, they are more valuable than ever before. Taking time out of one’s own day or sharing one’s own resources to help lift up a fellow human can have a far-reaching impact.
Living in a world of knee-jerk reactions, which each grows quicker and more severe, could easily be counter-acted from kind words or a good deed. Helping that person to realize there are real humans on the other end of the line, on the other side of the TV screen or on the other end of a confrontation can make all the difference.
When that young man was helped out of that ditch on a particularly snowy mid-winter day, he was given a new life purpose. To do the same for as many others as possible. That one unexpected good deed has now had a decade of lasting impacts, ranging from paying for strangers meals, to volunteering time and labor, feeding the homeless and encouraging others to do the same.
Help how you can, that you feel comfortable with. Your kind deed will not be forgotten. You’ll never waste your time performing the good deed, even if the gratification isn’t instant and verbally expressed.
Hold your head high and when the same is done for you, smile on the inside, because that goodness that you put out in the world has already returned and will continue to come back as long as you continue to put others first in your life.
